YOUTH WASH in Partnership With WATERAID Set to Launch “Vote4Wash Campaign” towards 2015 Election

Youth-Water Sanitation and Hygiene (YOUTHWASH) in collaboration with WATERAID NIGERIA (WANG) set to launch a project on WASH and Electioneering tagged “Vote4WASH” Campaign. In a meeting held today, tuesday 7th October, at CODE secretariat, Abuja by the YouthWASH working team confirmed the preparatory stages of the activities for the campaign as well as high level of optimism of the YouthWASH and WaterAid towards 2015 Election in Nigeria.

According to NatureUchenna Obiakor, National Coordinator, “Vote4WASH”is a citizen’s engagement and advocacy campaign program aimed at mobilizing and strengthening citizen’s engagement on electoral processes as a platform to demand for right to water and sanitation and increased accountability with their votes. While chairing the YouthWASH Working team meeting he further posited that “the electioneering process is a very important platform in the governance structure in Nigeria and it is important that the people engage in this process effectively for it to produce elected officials and programmes committed to fostering development and improvement in the life of the people”.

There are only a few opportunities to give voice to the people to demand for the provision or development plans of electoral candidates in exchange for votes said Hamzat Lawal, Public Relation Officer, YouthWASH

Strengthening citizens’ engagement on electioneering processes for increased accountability in WASH sector leading to a more equitable distribution of inclusive WASH services, is one of the major objectives of “Vote4WASH” Campaign explained by Obiakor, YouthWash Coordinator

The “Vote4WASH campaign which is schedule to kick-off by 15th October 2014, is intended to last for six months with consistent advocacy and intense capacity building for the youths across the six geo-political zones of the country.

Some of the expected outcomes of the “Vote4WASH Campaign will be to create platforms and space for citizens to engage with electoral candidates and demand for increased WASH services. Furthermore citizens that are empowered through information and facilitation of space to participate and engage in budget process said Shem, Programme Assistant, YouthWASH/WaterAid.
